WHO CAN APPLY FOR A
HALTON FOUNDATION GRANT?
We welcome applications from non-profit organizations worldwide researching indoor environmental quality and human wellbeing in occupied buildings.

ELIGIBILITY OVERVIEW
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
A Halton Foundation grant is typically awarded to a non-profit organization researching how to improve human wellbeing in indoor environments. Grants may also be applied by organizations that develop solutions aiming for better indoor environmental quality.
There are no geographic limitations; we have supported projects across multiple continents and welcome applications from organizations anywhere in the world.
Depending on the scope and nature of the project or program, the amount of the grant may vary between thousands of dollars and tens of thousands of dollars. Grants shall not exceed 30 000 USD per year.
Grants have been awarded in several areas including helping children with asthma, funding for the Himalayas Stove project, and providing grants to universities that research indoor environmental quality.
NON- PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
Universities, research institutes, registered charities, and NGOs are all eligible to apply
IEQ RESEARCH OR SOLUTION DEVELOPMENT
Projects must directly address indoor environmental quality, air quality, thermal comfort, or IEQ-linked illness
GLOBAL APPLICANTS WELCOME
No geographic restrictions; we fund research across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond
10% OVERHEAD CAP – STRICTLY ENFORCED
No more than 10% of total project costs may be allocated to administrative and overhead expenses. This is non-negotiable.
FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE
Commercial companies and for-profit entities cannot apply. A registered non-profit status is required.
GRANT TYPES
WHAT TYPES OF GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE
Depending on the scope and nature of the project, grant amounts may vary between several thousand and up to $30,000 USD per year. Three types of grants are available:

ONE-TIME GRANT
A single-year grant for a specific, clearly defined research purpose or project deliverable.
Up to $30,000

MULTI-YEAR GRANT
Sustained funding for longer-term research programs, for a maximum period of three years.
Up to $30k USD/year

START-UP PROGRAM GRANT
Seed funding to help launch a new program or initiative focused on indoor environmental quality.

APPLICATION PROCESS
HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?
Grants are awarded based on a completed Halton Foundation Grant Application. The process runs annually on the following schedule:

JULY 1
Application portal opens
The online application form becomes available. We recommend beginning your application early to allow time for internal review.

SETPTEMBER 1
Application deadline
All applications must be submitted by September 1. Late submissions are not accepted. Ensure your application is complete and all supporting documents are attached.
3
SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER
Review by the Board of Directors
All eligible applications are reviewed by the Halton Foundation Board of Directors. Additional information may be requested during this period.
4
NOVEMBER 1
Decision announceed
Successful applicants are notified directly and the award is announced on the Halton Foundation website. A Grant Agreement is then signed with the recipient organization.
