FAQS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Grants are awarded to registered non-profit organizations, including universities, research institutes, and registered charities that are researching improvements in human wellbeing in indoor environments, or developing solutions for enhanced indoor environmental quality. There are no geographic restrictions; organizations from any country are welcome to apply. For-profit companies are not eligible.
The application portal opens on July 1st and closes on September 1st each year. All applications must be submitted electronically with all required attachments before the September 1st deadline; late submissions are not accepted. Grant decisions are announced by November 1st, with successful applicants notified directly. To be emailed when the portal opens, contact us to join our mailing list.
Grants range from several thousand dollars up to a maximum of $30,000 USD per year. Three types of grants are available: one-time grants (single-year, specific-purpose), multi-year grants (up to three years of sustained funding), and start-up program grants (seed funding for new initiatives). The amount awarded depends on the scope and nature of the project.
The Halton Foundation requires that no more than 10% of total project costs be allocated to overhead and administrative expenses. This policy exists to ensure that as much of each grant as possible goes directly toward the research or program it is intended to fund. This requirement is strictly enforced; applications that propose overhead above 10% will be disqualified. All successful applicants must acknowledge and agree to this requirement before signing the Grant Agreement.
The Foundation funds research across three core areas of indoor environmental quality: indoor air quality and ventilation (airborne particulates, CO₂, pollutants, and ventilation systems), thermal conditions and human wellbeing (the effects of temperature, humidity, and radiant heat on health and productivity), and IEQ-linked illness (connecting substandard indoor environments to respiratory disease, asthma, and chronic health conditions). Grants may also be awarded to develop practical solutions that improve indoor environmental quality.
Successful applicants are notified directly by November 1st, and the award is announced publicly on the Halton Foundation website and their LinkedIn channel. The Foundation will then sign a Grant Agreement with the recipient organization, formalizing the terms of the funding. Grant recipients are also required to provide periodic updates on how the funds are being used and evidence that they are being applied for the purpose intended. For multi-year grants, continued funding each year is subject to satisfactory progress reporting.
The simplest way is to join our mailing list. You can email foundation@halton.com with the subject line “Mailing list,” and we will add you. You can also use the contact form on this page and select “Mailing list, notify me when applications open” as your subject. We send one email when the portal opens on July 1st each year and another reminder before the September 1st deadline.
